Hedgehog in the Fog

Since you should really see this, I have taken the liberty of posting the video below:



   This film was animated in 1975 by Russian Yuriy Norshteyn. I first saw it a few months ago, but it sticks in your head. I encourage you to watch it twice. This is because the first time you will be distracted by the subtitles. The second time you can watch the beauty of the animation.
   The little hedgehog is rather adorable. I have to say that. His innocence is animated very well. He is curious, but cautious; clever, but distractible. We want to cheer for him and laugh and pull him out of the river. This is due largely to the mastery of facial expression and direction.
   There is some brilliant storytelling in here, as well. When he realizes he forgot the jam, we remember where he left it. The camera made sure we would remember that. The camera is a great teller of emotion. So is the music, and the narration. It all carries the animation.
   Of course, the animation almost doesn't need assistance. Watch it again without sound. It is beautiful.
